The African Pragmatics Association, in conjunction with the School of Languages at the University of Ghana, invites you to its 1st conference at the University of Ghana, Legon Campus, from 6th to 7th February, 2020 under the theme: “Pragmatics in Africa: Theory and Practice”. This conference will be a gathering of scholars, researchers, students, and public speakers around the globe who seek to discuss language use in African contexts, from a theoretical and/or practical perspective. Abstracts for papers, panels and posters on (but not limited to) the following sub-themes are welcome. These sub-themes are expected to be interrogated within the African context. Papers/panels/posters should therefore have an overt African focus.
Submission Guidelines
All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The following paper categories are welcome:
- Full papers, Panels and Posters in any of the following areas are invited:
- Theoretical Issues in African Pragmatics
- Variations of Pragmatics
- Pragmatics and its interfaces
- Computer-Mediated Communication and Pragmatics
- Humor and/or Silence in Pragmatics
- Pragmatics and Gender
- Pragmatics and Translation/Interpreting
- Pragmatics and Religion
- Pragmatics and Politics
- Pragmatics and the Performing Arts
- Pragmatics and Health
- Pragmatics and the Media
- Cross/intercultural-cultural Pragmatics
- Pragmatics and Literature
- Discourse/pragmatic Markers and Communication
- Format for submissions
- Individual papers and posters: 200-250 words
- Proposal for panels: 500 words
- All submissions should be made in Times New Roman, 12pt.
- Paper presentations will be 20 minutes followed by a 10-minute discussion
- 120 minutes for panels with 4-6 presenters
- Proposals for panels should include:
- Title of the panel
- Convener
- Proposed panellist(s)
- Discussant (if necessary)
- Language (if different from English)
The language of the conference is English (but panels may be organized in French, Kiswhahili, Arabic or other regional languages). All submissions should be sent via EasyChair
