Introduction
People are the critical element for global advancement in Science and Technology. Different products, projects, or even new systems are developed to satisfy people needs. Creating comfortable living and working environments is focal to mitigate the short and long-terms negative effects due to climate changes. Such effects may extend not only to society, but they can spread to the level of the failures of the economic and physical infrastructure. Researchers, governments, organizations, and industries are all looking into resilient buildings, operations and communities or what can be called the life of living that could withstand extreme climate events such as extreme temperature—knowing that the temperature is one of the main controlling design factors for making resilient and sustainable buildings.
Oman is located on the south-eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, and its climate can be described as hot and dry in the arid, hot desert region and humid in the coastal areas. Such fact drives the momentum for researchers in the country to investigate, innovate, and design comfortable buildings, and operations so that comfortable, healthy-friendly environment is achieved, and the society can positively advance the country’s economic developments.
Researchers strive to improve the current and develop new theories in the area of comfort at the extremes to advance technologies and products to cope with this need. One important mean to achieve this advancement is arranging conferences in the field of “Comfort At The Extremes” like CATE’21.
The first Comfort At Extremes (CATE’19) conference was arranged in Heriot-Watt University, Dubai 2019. The CATE conferences build on the premier Comfort research network and its popular Windsor Conference series. The conference reaches out all relevant researchers, governmental bodies, and industries with interest in looking into the nature and the scale of extreme temperature problems, the possible solutions and opportunities to build a healthy society and sustainable economy, and most importantly, joining efforts for future research collaboration between researchers and industry.
The 2nd International Conference on the Comfort At The Extremes, 2021 (CATE’21) is the second round of the CATE’19 which was held in Dubai and with pleasure, it will be held at Sultan Qaboos University in 2021. The College of Engineering will arrange the conference from 24th to 26th October 2021. The hosting of this conference in Oman stems from the belief of the importance of this research area to the country and its contribution to energy sustainability. The CATE’21 will cover but not limited to the following different topics:
- Adapting buildings, cities and communities for climate change.
- Safe sleeping thermal thresholds in different climates
- Low energy, carbon and cost comfort solutions for weather extremes.
- Resilient energy systems to meet extreme comfort demands.
- New technologies and approaches to maintain comfort at extremes.
- Physiology, health and mortality at high and low temperatures.
