BPPA June 2019 Masterclass: Conceptual Engineering and Its Consequences in Society
11-12 June 2019
University of St Andrews, Scotland, UK, Edgecliffe 104
We are excited to announce the British Postgraduate Philosophy Association (BPPA) June 2019 Masterclass to be held at the University of St Andrews, on the 11th and 12th of June 2019. This intensive two-day masterclass aims to get postgraduate students to develop their understanding of a chosen theme through graduate presentations, group work, and talks by some of the leading experts on the topic followed by critical discussion. The Masterclass provides an ideal environment where participants can receive valuable feedback on their research from internationally renowned philosophers and exchange ideas with people working in the same area.
June 2019 Theme: Conceptual Engineering and Its Consequences in Society
Our chosen theme this year is: Conceptual Engineering and Its Consequences in Society. The masterclass will focus on the role that certain concepts, and their use in novel ways or their manipulation, plays/has played in shaping our societies. The masterclass is intended to focus the discussion on: i) the process(es) by which manipulating concepts can impact voters/governments/organizations' decisions, and ii) the role conceptual engineering has played recently (/will play in the near future) in this particular sphere.
Keynote Speakers
Patrick Greenough (University of St Andrews)
Mona Simion (University of Glasgow)
Rachel Sterken (University of Oslo)
Kevin Scharp (University of St Andrews)
Call for participation
We are currently welcoming applications from postgraduates to participate in the masterclass as well as for masterclass postgraduate presenters. We especially encourage submissions from members of underrepresented groups in philosophy. Additional facilities and funding may be available for applicants with reduced mobility or childcare responsibilities (please contact us if this is needed). Participation is free of charge but space is limited and priority may be given to the participants who demonstrate they will benefit most from the masterclass.
To apply to be a masterclass participant, please send us: (i) a brief description of the relevance of your research to the masterclass(250 words max), and (ii) a brief cover letter explaining how you hope to benefit from participating by email at bppa.masterclass.19@gmail.com) by the 20th of April 2019.
To apply to be a graduate presenter, please submit, in addition to the above, a 500 words abstract of the talk you would like to give, prepared for anonymous review, through EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ceics1), also by the 20thof April 2019. The paper should be suited for a 30-40 minutes presentation, which will be followed by a 15-minutes discussion.
Notifications of acceptance for both graduate participants and speakers will be sent no later than the 8th of May 2019. Authors of accepted papers will be asked to send a draft of their paper by the 1st of June 2019, to be circulated to all participants prior to the masterclass.
