Call for Submissions CUPUM 2023
For more than thirty years, CUPUM has been a premier international conference for the exchange of ideas and applications of computing technologies to address a diverse range of social, managerial, and environmental problems impacting urban planning and development. Recent innovations in information and communication technologies have thrust this topic into the public spotlight. For our 2023 event, submissions on these topics are especially welcome:
- Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning in the City: algorithms that analyzes big data from transit systems, cellphone networks, social media, and other sources generate new opportunities for insight and decision-making, but also raise important technical, ethical, and analytic questions;
- Urban Mobility leverages new data and theory to build a richer understanding of movement within urban environments and to develop improved tools for planning and policymaking;
- Platform Urbanism efforts have become a major area of research and implementation as cities experiment with new uses of urban sensing and communication technologies but also are impacted by new digital economies (e.g., Uber, Zillow).
Submission of book chapters and short conference papers will be done using EasyChair software via links from this Conference website. You will need to register as an author with EasyChair to make a submission. Book chapter drafts and conference paper abstracts are currently under review. Authors of submitted chapters and short conference papers may update their author information and submissions via the submission webpage (TBA).

Submission Options
Participants have a choice of two submission options:
- Option 1: Book Chapter [closed]
- Option 2: Short Conference Paper, oral or poster [active]
At least one co-author must register for and present the chapter or paper at the conference. All submissions of proposed book chapters or short conference papers should be written in English and include an abstract that contains a title together with a brief description of the proposed topic, methods used, key results, and some discussion of the research implications for urban planning and urban management. All submissions also should be accompanied by the name, affiliation, address, telephonenumber, and email address of each author. For co-authored papers, one individual should be identified as the corresponding author.
EasyChair submission
All submissions are to be submitted blind.
Please do not include personally identifiable information such as author names or institutions in the file you upload to EasyChair. This includes file contents, file name, or file metadata.
Your name, email, and affiliation are included in your EasyChair profile but will not be accessible to reviewers.
Option 1: Book Chapter
Every CUPUM conference we publish a book with a specific theme. This year it will be AI and Platforms in the City, where we will accept a broad definition of algorithms, which can range from random forest to neural networks and can encompass the ethics and urban governance and management of AI/machine learning. We also will accept various interpretations of platforms urbanism, from theory to practice (use of Uber, Strava data, application development). Twenty-five to 30 chapters will be selected for inclusion in a book, published by Springer in time for the conference. These chapters will be selected based on the outcomes of a double-blind peer review process overseen by the book co-editors. Chapters not accepted into the book are invited to be revised and re-submitted as conference papers (see below). Chapters should be 4,000 to 6,000 words in length, including notes, figures, tables, and references. Chapters need an abbreviated abstract (max 150 words) covering the introduction, methodology, major conclusions, and recommendations. Abstracts will be in English and French online and in print. Inclusion of the paper as a chapter in the book implies acceptance of a publishing agreement which requires transfer of copyright to the publishers.
Book chapter submissions are now closed
Option 2: Conference Paper, oral or poster
In addition to the book, the conference also prepares a Conference Proceedings, which consists of short papers presented at the conference. Book chapter submissions not accepted for the book can be resubmitted for the conference and inclusion in the proceedings. Approximately three months after the call for book chapters, a general call is sent out for short conference papers. The Program Committee will select the conference presentations after a double-blind peer review of submitted drafts. Authors of accepted papers will then have about two months to finalize their papers. Short papers should be between 1,500 and 4,000 words, excluding notes, figures, tables, and references. They should begin with an abbreviated abstract (max. 150 words) covering the introduction, methodology, major conclusions, and recommendations. The Conference Proceedings will be available online with a DOI. The program committee will determine whether the short paper will be presented orally or as a poster (you also have the option to specify your preference to present as a poster upon submission). For short papers selected to be posters, the poster session will accommodate posters up to A0 in size (841 x 1189 mm, or 33.1 x 46.8 inches). Note, if your paper is selected as a poster, your submission will still be listed as a short paper in the proceedings.
