Open call for DACA
Papers
We welcome submissions of original research on data art for climate action in relation to the themes. There are three different paper submission categories for the DACA proceedings:
- Full paper (up to 5000 words in proceedings, recorded-video & poster presentation, optional demo)
- Short paper / extended abstract (up to 2000 words in proceedings, recorded-video & poster presentation, optional demo)
- Demo paper / extended abstract (up to 1200 words in proceedings, recorded-video & demo presentation. We encourage authors to attach additional supplementary materials such as audio/video examples, data sets, or measurements. For review, you can include anonymized links to cloud services or equal. For the camera-ready version, any such temporary links must be replaced by persistent links with handle/DOI or equal. Alternatively, you can upload supplementary material with your submission, up to 50MB. For supplementary materials more than 50MB, please use a link to an open-access web service, for example, Google Drive. For accepted contributions, the supplementary material will then be hosted together with the paper.)
Note the dates. For all three categories, use this template:
Word counts include all the text starting from the abstract except references and what is inside images and tables. Word counts include the abstract, headings, and all captions. All paper submissions, required to be fully anonymous, will be subjected to a rigorous double-blind peer review process by an international committee of experts. All of the submitted papers should demonstrate rigorous research methodology and will be evaluated according to novelty, academic quality, appropriateness of topic, importance, readability, and ethical standards.
Artworks
We invite proposals for artworks related to data sonification and visualization, environmental art, climate action, science communication, and other themes related to DACA. Submission should be formatted as:
- Extended abstract with author name(s) (up to 1200 words in DACA proceedings). The text should include title concept, and sufficient information about requirements for equipment, space, setup time, and so forth. Use this template:
Note that you should include a weblink to audiovisual documentation showcasing the artwork, or its technology (if it would be a first exhibition/performance), and an author bio(s) of up to 200 words. These do not count towards the word count of the extended abstract.
Note the dates. The two co-organisers (Graz, Hong Kong) will curate artworks for physical exhibition at several locations. Spaces in Hong Kong include the Singing Waves Gallery (a white-wall open foyer space) and the Multimedia Theatre (a black box equipped with a large screen and surround sound), as well as smaller rooms for dedicated audiovisual installations in the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre. Spaces in Graz are hosted by the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM) / University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in cooperation with the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change of the University of Graz. This will include the György-Ligeti-Saal, a concert hall for 5th-order Ambisonic sound and variable lighting and projection. In your submission you are encouraged to be as specific as possible in regards to preferred location and type of space for your artwork.
Submitted proposals will be subject to a peer review process by an international expert committee and a curated selection by the organisers. Documentation of the artworks will be available online after the conference. If artists of selected artworks are unable to attend due to international travel restrictions, we invite them to provide online versions in keeping with the hybrid mode of the conference.
Works-in-progress
We welcome submission of proposals for demonstrations of research and/or artworks that are ‘in progress’ (they might be tentative, speculative, or unfinished). We are also keen to consider position statements on climate action that address the main themes of the Conference. Submissions should be accompanied by an extended abstract. This category is especially suitable for submissions from young professionals and students. Note that the submission date is different from that of papers and artworks. Submissions will be screened by the conference organisers. Selected works-in-progress will be featured on the website but will not be part of the proceedings. Submission must include:
- Abstract with a description of the work-in-progress, and any technical information (300–500 words). Use this template:
Note that you should include a weblink to audiovisual documentation showcasing the technology and/or activity to be demonstrated, and an author bio(s) of up to 200 words. These do not count towards the word count of the abstract.
Attendance
Please note that at least one of the paper authors has to register and attend the conference in order for the paper to be accepted, presented, and included in the proceedings. Please note that registration of the conference is subject to the evolving public health situation in Hong Kong and recommendations made by universities for the organization of public events, therefore registration may be physical or virtual.
