- Conference: 2-4 June (Leiden/Online)
Description
Our call is open to all colleagues, including those but not limited to those working in the humanities, the (social) sciences, and heritage sectors, with an interest and enthusiasm in the application and use of digital technologies to the study of culture.
Submissions are welcome from researchers at all career stages. We particularly encourage early stage researchers (MA/PhD students and postdoctoral researchers) to submit abstracts.
The conference has a primary focus on recent advances concerning research activities in the Benelux as well as data- or research projects related to Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg. However, proposals from outside the Benelux are strongly encouraged as well.
Language
We accept abstracts written in English and in any official language of the Benelux. Please note that, from a practical standpoint, abstracts written and/or presented in any other language than English may limit the impact of your message.
Theme
The Humanities in a Digital World
In a year in which our societies have become ever more (post-)digital, the relevance and value of tools and perspective produced by those working in, on, and at the interface of the study of human culture and computing is more relevant than ever. Furthermore, in this time of crisis many core aspects of our work have also shifted into the digital realm, which presents unique new affordances and constraints.
This is felt in all aspects of our scholarly practices and we especially welcome papers that reflect on the Humanities in a Digital world, including but not limited to, the following themes of transition:
- Digital Humanities Education and Digital Education in the Humanities
- Collection, replication and evaluation of DH datasets and the role and value of FAIR approaches in a time of crisis.
- ‘True’ interdisciplinarity as a consequence of Digital Humanities and areas of convergence of the Humanities at large due to ongoing and accelerated digital transformation of our world.
Beyond this theme we invite submissions of abstracts on any aspect of Digital Humanities: practical experimentation, theorising, cross- and multidisciplinary work, and new and relevant developments.
For DH Benelux 2021 we welcome proposals for contributions suitable for a hybrid format, specifically (1) research papers; (2) panels; and (3) digital posters.
Abstracts should clearly state the title and name and affiliation of the authors and presenters, if you have one please include your twitter username too. Also indicate for which presentation category (or categories) and thematic strand you are submitting your proposal. The word length is dependent on the proposal you submit, see details below. References and/or bibliography are excluded from the word count. Proposals may contain graphics and illustrations.
- Research Papers (abstracts of 750 words, paper presentation 20 mins + 10 mins for discussion) are suitable for presenting empirical work, research methods, concise theoretical arguments, and cross- and multidisciplinary work. This format is also open for reports on early stage and ongoing research or proof of concepts. The stage of completion of the research must be clearly stated in the abstract.
- Panels (abstracts of 1000 words) which bring together a group of 4-5 panelists to discuss particular challenges of a methodological, theoretical, epistemological nature or discuss current practices and issues in the field. Panels will be 1 hour slots in which discussion between and with panel members and other participants will be the focus, guided by a moderator (who guides discussion but can also be active as a panelist). All panel members are asked to prepare a short (2-3) minute pre-recorded video outlining their point of departure. These videos will be played at the start of the panels and should also be made available beforehand.
- Digital Posters (abstracts of 500 words) are particularly suited for detailed technical explanations and clarifications, and for the show and tell of projects and research alike. More information on the presentation and dissemination platform for posters will be shared soon.
The abstracts will be peer-reviewed by the DH Benelux 2021 Programme Committee and published on the DH Benelux 2021 website. Authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to submit a full research article for the DH Benelux Journal. A separate call for journal submissions will be made after the conference.
DH Benelux will be a fully online conference. In addition, we aim to have a limited on site programme, as well. What this means in practice will be hammered out during the following months. Below we outline some of the up-to-date details.
Contributions
Your acceptance of contribution is based on a review of content alone and on the baseline expectance that you’re able and willing to have your work be presented in an online format.
In the case of a hybrid contribution (on site as well as via an online platform; paper or panels only), the local organising committee will provide the necessary infrastructure on location atLeiden University.
If your contribution has been accepted, you are guarenteed a presentation slot, whether you are able to present on site or online in one of the (parallel) sessions.
Online Platform(s)
The organising committee is currently evaluating the best platforms to use. Whatever platform we will use, we ensure it will be (1) have no fees to sign up for and (2) has solid data protection and security systems in place.
We are currently looking at a combination of community/chat platform+ videochat platform, with, in addition and potentially, a specific platform for poster presentations.
After your presentations and, if you consent, your presentation will be shared and viewable via the video platform of Leiden University.
If you have any suggestions for our consideration, we would like to hear of them. Please, email us your suggestions before February 5.
On Site
Any on site meeting will be limited in terms of participant numbers (as it looks now 48/day) and follow Leiden University’s Campus Protocol.
We will open registration for on site participation up first to primary presenters of papers. Any remaining slots will be opened for other, non-presenting participants.
Whether you participate online or on site, conference registration is free of charge.
We are currently looking at lunch options for on site participants, which will be bookable at cost at the time of registration.
