II International Congress in Digital Humanities - HDRio2020
City: Rio de Janeiro / Rio de Janeiro
Location: Human and Social Sciences Centre at UNIRIO campus- Av. Pasteur, 458, Urca
Date: Monday, 1 June 2020
HDRio2020 is an academic, cultural, and artistic event—in its second edition in Rio de Janeiro—that contemplates the emerging field of Digital Humanities from a Southern Global perspective.
“Contemporary Crossroads”
Introduction
What are the possible paths between humanism and posthumanism, real and virtual, analogical and digital, truth and fake news? Which direction do we choose when we are at the crossroads of the power of words and algorithms? To address these fundamental questions, HDRio2020 has chosen the theme “Contemporary Crossroads” for Rio de Janeiro’s II International Congress in Digital Humanities, 1-5 June 2020 in Rio de Janeiro, at and around the campuses of Rio de Janeiro’s State Federal University (UNIRIO) in Urca.
HDRio2020 invites IT professionals, social scientists, thinkers, professors, students, researchers, governmental institutions, social organizations, companies, and the general public to contemplate and debate the advantages and disadvantages of these crossroads for life by submitting articles, posters, podcasts, applications, games, platforms, and art projects for presentation in longform and short-form lectures, roundtables, workshops, and/or in a Startup Fair (for applications, games, and digital platforms), as well as an itinerant exhibition and other cultural events in an extensive program, to be defined.
Argument
The professors, researchers, and activists of the HDRio2020 Scientific and Organizational Committees perceive an urgent need to think critically and creatively about the exponential growth of information in the Digital Era, its processes and technologies. Therefore, in addition to presenting an academic proposal we choose to listen to the multiple thinkers and doers impacted by our theme, in their lives, the lives of their families, their community, their institutions and companies.
Methodological Strategy
Inspired by Tim Berners-Lee’s humanist and collaborative Contract for the Web, we have also chosen to climb over the academic wall and take the event to the streets (and the crossroads), particularly in Urca, where we are inviting local citizens, organizations and businesses, such as Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), the CIA Caminho Aéreo do Pão de Açucar, and the Forte de São João, among others, to participate in HDRio2020 with their digital humanities projects and to open their doors and installations to the Congress.
Organizers, Partners, and Sponsors
Organization: Laboratório de Preservação e Gestão de Acervos Digitais (the Laboratory for the Preservation and Management of Digital Archives--LABOGAD/UNIRIO), the Laboratory in Digital Humanities at the Brazilian Institute for Information in Science and Technology (LARHUD/IBICT) and Urca Institute, a non-profit using personal history for social action in the commons.
HDRio2020 relies on the sponsorship and collaboration of its partners: Pró_Reitoria de Extensão da UFRJ (Dean's Office in Applied Learning at UFRJ), Laboratório de Humanidades Digitais do CPDOC/FGV (the Network Digital Humanities Laboratory at CPDOC/FGV), do Laboratório de Humanidades Digitais da Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa (the Digital Humanities Laboratory at the Rui Barbosa Cultural Center, LabHD/FCRB), IED-Rio (Istituto Europeo di Design), Asociación Argentina de Humanidades Digitales (AAHD), MediaLab.UFRJ, Laboratório de Estudos de Filosofia Pop (Laboratory of Pop Philosophy POP-LAB/UNIRIO), do Laboratório Práticas Performativas Contemporâneas/Performers sem Fronteiras (Laboratory of Contemporary Performative Practice/Performers without Borders CLA/UNIRIO), Laboratório Multidimensional de Eventos em Turismo (Laboratory of Multidimensional Events in Tourism LABETUR/UNIRIO), Laboratório de Humanidades Digitais da UFBA, Laboratório de Humanidades Digitais da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (HDLab), Concórdia University and others.
Open Call for Contributors
The II International Congress in Digital Humanities (HDRio2020) and its organizers, partners, and sponsors invite all who are interested to submit proposals, considering that the Digital Humanities is an emerging and transdisciplinary area of knowledge that challenges us to overcome the theoretical-practical divide between the human and exact sciences.
The digital world presents ever new challenges in the contemporary world and demands wisdom as well as curiosity, courage as well as serenity, independence as well as solidarity, to be better prepared for the various possible futures that are to come.
