2019 is observed as the ‘International year of Indigenous Languages’. The United Nations, through this celebration, aims to establish an interesting and unique interrelation between language, development, peace and reconciliation. Languages, being the core factor of identity of ethnicities, communities, cultures, states and nations should be given a right place in the ecological space where they exist. In the recent decades, we have witnessed not only the conflict of power relations of dominant speech communities over the minority languages or group of languages, but how indigenous and minority languages are facing the threat of endangerment. Therefore, due recognition to minority and indigenous languages and efforts to protect and preserve endangered languages will enable them to strive to assert their existence to bring about the ecological balance of human existence and human rights.
