The organizing committee of PLaVA is pleased to announce the international conference on Perspectives on Language Variation and Attitudes (PLaVA) which will take place in Limassol on 7 & 8 November, 2020. The conference is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the Research and Innovation Foundation. The conference is part of a two-year project called Language Variation and Attitudes: A sociolinguistic analysis of the linguistic performance and attitudes of Greek Cypriots in Nicosia, Cyprus (PI: Kleanthes K. Grohmann, University of Cyprus).
As stated almost a century ago, “[e]veryone knows that language is variable” (Sapir 1921, p. 147). Since then the study of language variation has witnessed significant development in a variety of linguistic fields. The central theme of this conference is language variation and attitudes, and its aim is to attract research from the fields of sociolinguistics, linguistic theory, and dialectal variation. Our goal is to create a forum where scholars working on language variation and attitudes from different perspectives, and using different and innovative methodological tools, can exchange ideas and engage in a fruitful discussion.
Scholars are invited to submit their proposals on any relevant aspect of variation in language use and/or the linguistic system. We particularly welcome papers on the following topics:
- variation and change in understudied, underdocumented speech communities
- acquisition of sociolinguistic variation in multilingual, bi(dia)lectal, and diglossic communities
- language attitudes and ideologies, and their role in explaining language variation
- variation in typical and atypical or impaired language development
The topics listed are not exhaustive and any submission on the conference’s central theme is welcome.
Submission Guidelines
