RostUL9, as the other 8 RostUL editions organised in the previous years, attempts to create an international discussion on Romanian Studies and Translation abroad by providing a platform to promote the exchange of knowledge, research outputs and experiences in the field of Romanian Studies and Translation and by establishing strong connections between various linguistic and cultural spaces and contexts.
Submission Guidelines
Hosted by the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon and the Romanian Lecturship in Portugal, the 9th edition of the conference dedicated to Romanian Studies at the University of Lisbon, RostUL9: Irony and Humour in Translation, aims to bring specialists and scholars from various areas into an engaging inter- and cross-disciplinary dialogue about one or more of the following topics:
- Humour and irony at the crossroads of cultures;
- Aspects of irony and humour (un)translatability;
- Pragmatic aspects of irony translation;
- Translation strategies of culture-bound humour and irony;
- The importance of the socio-cultural context in translating humour and irony;
- Irony and humour from a cognitive - linguistic approach;
- Humour and irony in gender identity discourses;
- Irony and self-irony in self-identity perception and construction;
- Subversive humour and its translation;
- Translating humour and irony for subtitling and voice-over;
- Humour and irony in foreign language teaching.
Abstracts should be 300 words (excluding references), in English, and should provide the following:
- clearly articulated research question(s);
- research approach, data and methods;
- if possible, results and interpretation.
Conference languages: Romanian, Portuguese, English.
Presentation slot: 20 minute-presentation plus 10-minute discussion.
