Submission deadline | March 25, 2022 |
Conference dates: 7-9 July 2022
Format: Presentations will take place online on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 July, followed by a day of in-person workshops on Saturday 9 July in Glasgow.
Spheres of Singing is a celebration of the breadth of research and practice of singing and song. We invite contributions from undergraduates, postgraduates, academics, practitioners (singers, singing teachers, song leaders, conductors, educators, therapists, etc.) and composers. All those working and practicing across different aspects of music, singing and song, and researchers from across the arts and humanities, social sciences, sciences or medical research, who are researching singing are invited to send submissions and/or workshop proposals.
What is the purpose of the conference/what are our goals?
- Provide a forum for academic research that focuses on singing
- Be accessible for everyone with an interest in singing
- Foster knowledge exchange and collaboration between academic disciplines, and sharing of ideas between academics and practitioners
- Provide a space that facilitates and encourages practice alongside research
- Offer an opportunity for networking for and between academics and practitioners
- Opportunity to showcase singing and singing research taking place in Scotland
Disclaimer
We are still hoping to organise a blended event with the opportunity to participate in person and/or online. However, due to the renewed uncertainty caused by the pandemic, we may be forced to move entirely online at short notice depending on Scottish Government and institutional guidance.
Submission Guidelines
Proposed submissions could take the form of:
- Presentation
- Poster
- Lecture Recital
- Short film
- Podcast episode
- If you have an alternative format you would like to use, please drop us an email!
The length of presentations will be confirmed when the format of the conference is finalised. Presentations can be live or pre-recorded and (hopefully) presented in person or remotely.
We welcome abstracts of 300 words. Abstracts should contain a title and a short summary of your proposed presentation. If you are less familiar with writing abstracts, the short summary should tell the reader:
- What you have done/are doing
- What has been done previously and how you differ (Optional for non-academics)
- What you have found/experienced/developed/enjoyed
- Why it is interesting to a general singing audience
Please include five key words (these will help us allocate abstracts for reviewing, and also theming the programme). Abstracts should not include any personal information. Please indicate whether you are submitting as an academic, practitioner or composer and what format you would like your submission to take. If you submit more than one submission, you may only be first author on one presentation and one poster (no limits on non-first-author submissions).
If you would like to submit your proposal in an alternative format (e.g. video, audio, image etc.) please drop us an email and we’ll be happy to discuss.
Workshops
We welcome workshop proposals for workshops of 1 hour (in person, Glasgow, 9 July). If you are interested in giving a workshop on any aspect of singing, please email us. Fees for delivering workshops will be offered depending on the funding available.
