Me empeño en habitar algo que aún no me pertenece. No hay sosiego si miras desde el filo. Ángelo Néstore, Hágase mi voluntad (2020)
The complex relationship between the body and the being has been thoroughly discussed throughout history, and the conception of the body has been an object of study for the different branches of knowledge for centuries. However, it was not until the final decades of the 20th century that the body began to be discussed as an active element in the claim of identity rights. Authors such as Judith Butler and, later on, Jack Halberstam (formerly known as Judith Halberstam), Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore or Finn Mackay joined the conversation around the body as a device for dissent.
The binary gender system that prevails in our society, as well as the idea that the body must comply with a series of imposed defining rules, leads us to reflect on the realities of two types of bodies. On the one hand, the experiences of individuals who conform to the norm and, on the other, the experiences of those who are on the margins and defy these strict social precepts.
In an attempt to highlight dissident identities and heterodox manifestations, this second edition of the "International Conference on Transitions: Identities and Cultures in Motion" aims to address the way gender, its frontiers and the social constructions that sustain it have conditioned the evolution of identities and bodies throughout history. From an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspective, this event focuses on the experiences of those on the margins of hegemonic and normative narratives, thus delving into the discourses and counter-discourses surrounding binarism.
Individuals and their bodies, in their need to adapt to the environment, repeat and assimilate the patterns of their surroundings. However, rebellion and dissent are inherent to the norms and conventions that motivate them and, as Foucault notes in The Will to Knowledge (1976), “where there is power, there is resistance, and yet, or rather consequently, this resistance is never in a position of exteriority in relation to power”. Thus, when individuals do not adhere to the dominant narrative, they write new dissident scripts that can be used as precedents. These acts of divergence are, precisely, the focus of our event.
In short, this year’s edition of "Transitions: Identities and Cultures in Motion" welcomes all contributions addressing the study and critical reflection of these realities and their impact on society from the perspectives of Humanities, Social and Legal sciences, the Arts and digital culture.
