U-VALUE Project 2022 Seminar
The Impact of Higher Education Institutions on the Quality of Life in their Regions
University of Beira Interior, April 29, 2022
Covilhã, Portugal
Organised by
Center of Research in Higher Education Policies (CIPES)
Higher education institutions (HEIs) contribute to the economic, social and cultural development of countries, playing a dominant role in the development of their surrounding regions, also increasing the resident population due to the entry of students. HEIs are a critical asset for their regions, and even more for those with scarce resources, where the private sector may be weak or relatively small, with low levels of research and development, and limited innovation. Through the involvement of HEIs with the various actors in the region of influence, it is expected that the former meets the needs of that region, in addition to producing improvements in the quality of life of the entire population. Thus, the involvement of HEIs with the region, more than a process that can be objectively planned or foreseen, is a learning process that characterizes the specificities of a subjective deliberation process. This process is simultaneously influenced by factors that operate at the intra-organizational and regional level and at the level of the environment to which they belong.
