Land Science and Innovation 2020 (LSI2020), formerly known as Future Land Force Conference, is Australia’s premier event for defence researchers, industry professionals, and academics interested in transforming the military land force through science and technology. LSI2020 will address the question of how science and technology can help a modern land force to prepare and design for accelerating change across cooperation, competition and conflict. LSI2020 will include invited and technical presentations, interactive sessions, and a panel discussion with well-regarded national and international defence science, industry and military representatives. It is organised in the following two subprograms.
1. Technology Dimension of Accelerated Warfare
Subprogram 1 of LSI2020 will explore how technology contributes to challenges that may require modern armies to embrace new ways of thinking, equipping, training, educating, organising and preparing for war. Technology is evolving rapidly in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, robotics and swarms, human performance and resilience, human-machine collaboration, pervasive computing, data analytics, networks of collaborating things, software-defined or multi-functional mission systems, advanced sensors, electronic and cyber effects, biotechnology and nanotechnology, energetics, materials and manufacturing, to name but a few. Combined with military concepts, this technology will create both new threats and new opportunities.
2. Science and Technology for an Army in Motion
In order to deal with the rapidly changing world of accelerated warfare, modern armies will need to be designed for change. Thus, Subprogram 2 of LSI2020 invites presentations of research and innovations that support an Army in Motion, i.e. an army that has an adaptive mindset and is able to balance the tensions between being ready now and future ready. Such research and innovation can come from many disciplines and industries, covering such topics as individual, team and organisational adaptability, creative thinking, modern training and lifelong learning systems, agile workforce design, leadership for change, risk aware decision making, scalable operations, smart customer and buyer approaches, process simplification, and many more.
Submission Guidelines
All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. The following paper categories are welcome:
- Extended abstracts (max 2 pages as of IEEE template) for the Innovation Stream describing leading-edge technological advancements and human interventions that will enable the future land force to keep pace with accelerated warfare.
- Extended abstracts (max 2 pages as of IEEE template) for the Research Stream covering novel concepts, validated models and potential solutions to the accelerated warfare challenges.
All submissions will be reviewed by at least two independent referees. Submissions to the innovation stream will be assessed for novelty and impact on transforming land power of the technology/innovation presented. Research stream submissions will be assessed against originality, relevance and scientific quality criteria. Based on the referees’ recommendations, the Technical Program Committee will either assign papers to plenary or interactive sessions, or reject the submission. A best paper award will be given to the highest quality contribution. To be published in the LSI 2020 Conference Proceedings, the author of an accepted paper is required to register for the conference and must present the paper, as assigned by the Technical Program Committee. Non-refundable registration fees must be paid prior to submitting the final, publication-ready version of the paper. Only accepted papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings.
