Narrative Sources - a Comparative Study of Archival Pedagogical Practices

EasyChair Preprint no. 6054

6 pagesDate: July 13, 2021

Abstract

Hungarian state archives have a long history of involvement in the non-formal education of primary and secondary school students, but this decades-long history has not proved sufficient to make teaching with archival sources universal. However, following the integration of the National Archives of Hungary in 2012, the professional focus of the activity has changed. This change of emphasis also requires an international perspective and comparative studies on the pedagogical practices of other national archives.

The aim of this study is to examine the archival pedagogical practices of Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. This study is divided into two parts: a brief, outline overview of the continental and Atlantic educational systems that fundamentally define archival pedagogical practice, and a description of the main features of archival pedagogical practice in each nation. The study relies primarily on online resources, aids and teaching materials available on websites that are accessible to educators and can be used free of charge.

The study fits into the wider context of the development of Hungarian archival pedagogy.

Keyphrases: Germany, teaching with archival sources, United Kingdom, United States of America
