Abstract

There are many types of singlemode–multimode–singlemode (SMS) fiber optics developed for various types of sensors. Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) can measure the power loss per unit length, as well as indicate the location of a fault in the network system optical fiber. In this study, a strain measurement technique using fiber was developed SMS and OTDR structured optics. After that, calculations are carried out using the interpolation method Lagrange based on Borland Delphi 7. Characteristics of each SMS structured fiber optic sensor has been made using multimode optical fiber with a length of 5.5 cm, 6 cm, 6.5 cm, and 7 cm and with the use of its operating wavelength, which is 1310 nm. Strain testing was carried out by providing a shift from 0 - 1000 µm with variations in increase every 100 µm. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the multimode length of 5.5 cm and 6 cm increased the graph. The more the strain increases, the greater the power loss caused. While long multimode 6.5 cm and 7 cm indicates that there is a decrease graph. Based on the results calculation using the Lagrange Interpolation method, the resulting error is in length multimode 6 cm has the smallest error. For example, at a strain of 1500 µε the error is occurs from the results of calculations using the Lagrange interpolation method for length multimode 6 cm is 0.049 %.
