An Installation of Multilayer Green Roof in a Typical Southern Italy Urban Environment

EasyChair Preprint no. 8048

Abstract

Green roof is a technological system that involves the use of vegetation in the upper layer of a building (Cascone, 2019). Over time, the interest in green roofs has grown increasingly, due to the achievable benefits, that meet many of the objectives of the various national, European and international policies for mitigation and adaptation to climate change and sustainable development ( e.g., 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, EU Cohesion Policy 2021-2027, Next Generation EU, National Research Program 2021-2027, PNRR). Among the benefits linked to the green roofs, one of the most important is the improvement of the microclimate of urban centers thanks to the presence of vegetation which: 1) has positive effects on the reduction of urban "heat islands"; 2) it allows to considerably reduce air pollution and sequester atmospheric CO2; 3) allows to reduce the polluting load of precipitation through biofiltration processes on porous soil matrices and the activity of microorganisms present in the soil; 4) allows a lamination effect of rainwater through temporary storage and controlled release processes (De Nardo et al., 2003; Liu & Minor, 2005; Fioretti et al., 2010). In particular, the installation of a multilayer system, characterized by a greater storage capacity compared to conventional green roofs, allows a better management of rainwater and a reduction of the pressures on the sewage systems. The purpose of this study is to describe a multilayer green roof installed on the roof of the Engineering Department of the University of Palermo. The installation, part of the Polder Roof Field Lab pilot project, allowed for intensive monitoring throughout 2021, whose main results are reported in this work.
