Abstract

This final graduation work focuses on the evaluation and optimization of the use of water resources in two plots in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It included a description of the soils of the plots, in which the soil is characterized in terms of its texture, capacity for organic matter, moisture retention capacity and topography. A series of soil samplings, topographic surveys and measurements of irrigation parameters such as advance times, cross sections and flows were carried out. Likewise, with the samples obtained, laboratory analyzes were carried out to find out the physical parameters mentioned. Secondly, the irrigation events of the summer of 2019 were evaluated. The result of the evaluations allowed to know the application efficiency, distribution uniformity, deep percolation ratio, runoff ratio and average depth of infiltrated water in each event of irrigation. Finally, the irrigation parameters were optimized through modeling. These variations led to optimization of application efficiency, distribution uniformity, and deep percolation. It was obtained that although the soils of the plots present a clayey texture, other characteristics of their structures lead to the dynamics of the water in their soils being totally different. In the study plots a current efficiency was estimated that ranged between 6 and 35%, with deep percolation ratios of between 7 and 20% and runoff ratios of between 45 and 85%. In the modeling, it was possible to optimize the flow, cutting time, slope and furrow length parameters in such a way that a water saving of between 22 and 63% was achieved.
