Fodder Availability in the Agoufou Pond Watershed in the Malian Gourma

Agoufou, a temporary water point in the Sahel in the Malian gourma since the 1950s became permanent in 1990 due to climate change. The natural resources of the basin have experienced various anthropogenic pressures due to the settlement of villages and transhumance. The objective of this work is to study the effects of climate change on fodder availability in the Agoufou watershed before and after the great droughts of 1974 and 1984. The methodology adopted consisted in detecting changes in land use from multidate satellite images (ETM and ETM+OLO/TIR) coupled with land outputs in order to identify the causes of the perpetuation of the pond and the increase in its water level.

A periodic assessment of the availability of forage enabled the state of the plant formations to be understood. This study showed that climate change is an increased threat to the production and availability of herbaceous biomass. Livestock pressure around the pond is a factor in the degradation of available forage. The availability of herbaceous forage is a function of distance from the pond in time and space. The months of April-May have the longest distances of 15 km from the pond.
