Study of Shrinkage, Swelling and Preservative Uptake of Beech and Turkey Oak Woods by Pre-Vacuum Wood Preservative Impregnation Processes

Abstract

The aim of our research was to compare the treatment of beech (Fagus sylvatica) and turkey oak (Quercus cerris) xylem by double-vacuum (a. k. a. VAV) and Bethell processes and some of their physical properties (shrinkage, swelling). Beech and oak are commonly used as railway sleepers. The schedules used on them were determined following Reinprecht. Turkey oaks are a less used wood species in industry, so we also aimed to increase the scientific data on their impregnability. To perform the vacuum and vacuum-pressure saturation procedures, we used a 5% copper sulphate distilled aqueous solution as defined in CEN EN 14734. The impregnation test specimens were formed from the heartwood part of the tested planks.

Keyphrases: beech (Fagus sylvatica), Bethell-process, double-vacuum process, preservative uptake, shrinkage, swelling, turkey oak (Quercus cerris)
