The Impact of Arte Radius on Crack Initiation and Propagation in a Coated Cutting Tool During the Machining Operation

Abstract

The present work focuses on the use of the Abaqus computational code, based on finite element analysis, to investigate the cracking of a diamond-coated cutting tool. During the machining process, the tool is exposed to considerable thermal and mechanical stresses. Thermal stresses at the chip/tool interface can reach thousands of degrees. In addition, the plastic deformation of the material generates reactive stresses that cause the tool to bend and vibrate. Since machined materials are rarely homogeneous in nature, stresses vary rapidly, increasing the risk of cracking. The combination of high temperatures, particularly thermal shock at the start of machining, and vibration can lead to crack formation in the tool.
This work proposes to combine the XFEM extended finite element method with the cohesive element method to simulate cracks in the coating of a tungsten carbide cutting tool. The aim is to study the effect of the cutting tool's edge radius on crack initiation and propagation. This approach will enable us to gain a better understanding of cracking mechanisms and optimize tool design to improve durability and performance during machining.
