A Cybernetic Approach to Digital Literature

Abstract

The introduction of digital technology in the literary creation process has profoundly changed the work materially, textually and aesthetically. This resulted in the creation of a recent artistic field, that of digital literature. This gives rise to debates and discussions in literary and artistic circles, around its terminology, categorization and relevance. As the first year of a doctorate, we will try to use in this research proposal our skills in the field of literary studies, in particular from a socio-critical angle, to penetrate the field of digital literature and identify its specific, aesthetic and social dimensions. The research problematic can be summarized through the following question: How does French digital literature express the interactive cyberculture of today's increasingly interdependent and interconnected human societies? Can cybernetic, systemic and sociocritical theories provide a powerful conceptual apparatus, applicable to the technical, social and aesthetic analysis of digital literary works? What can they jointly add to the study of digital literature?
