Abstract

The focus of communication in hospitality is most often on communicating with guests from a business standpoint, while less attention is paid to professional communication competencies essential for teachers in hospitality management education. Four focus group discussions were conducted with 24 hospitality undergraduate students from a government hotel school in Dhaka, Bangladesh. There was mostly consensus on the critical aspects of communication, such as (a) case study, (b) technology application, (c) students’ competency deemed necessary for effective hospitality management education practice. On the other hand, (a) topical experience, (b) easy writing style, (c) display of body language, (d) leadership quality, (e) engagement approach were identified as teachers’ communication competencies for effective teaching and learning.

Keyphrases: communication experience, Focus Group Discussion, hospitality management, teachers’ competencies, technology in education
