Abstract

Hybrid switched-capacitor converters (HSCC) show promising efficiency and power density compared to pure capacitor- or inductor-based counterparts. The recent development of various HSCC topologies poses a serious challenge to choose the best-fitted one for a particular application target. This paper proposes a benchmarking construct that enables direct comparison of common HSCC topologies by analyzing various performance metrics such as passives volume and bandwidth. The normalized approach comparing all topologies at the same efficiency and same output voltage ripple enables generation of some guidelines that could serve to help topology selection and optimization towards wider industrial adoption and new topology exploration.

Keyphrases: DC-DC converter, hybrid converter topology, switching converters
