Abstract

In this modern era, with the encouragement of wireless communication, computer, the internet and with the increase in development of digital signal processing (DSP), information theory and coding theory, data is frequently exchanged over internet. Even data can be accessed from any part of the world. It increases the possibility of attack over network. Many techniques are developed in the past that protect data from these attacks. Steganography is one of the popular techniques that protect data from unauthorized parties. It has increased to a great extent for transferring secret information form transmitting end to the receiving end. The word steganography from Greek means concealed or obscured. The idea behind steganography is wrapping the secret data into another data for security. Bits replacement in cover object is performed and secret data bits are taken as new bits which are embedded in the cover object at the place of replaced bits. Generally bits are replaced at the left hand side and this technique is called as least significant bit. The primary goal of steganography is to protect data in such a way that attacker even do not know that there is some secret content in the cover data. Modification in cover object should be indiscernible. The significance behind steganography is that the message to be transmitted cannot be detected by the subjective testing. The efficiency of this technique is mainly depends on how much amount of data can be embedded inside cover image. Steganography can be easily used along with others security techniques to improve the performance of the system. This paper gives the review of various steganographic techniques in spatial domain. It also illustrates the different types of steganography, various performance evaluation parameters, its applications,
its advantages and disadvantages.
