Monitoring Global Coherence of Protagonist, Causal, and Intentional Dimensions in Second Language Reading: A Preliminary Study on Eye Tracking

Abstract

This study investigated L2 readers’ monitoring of local and global coherence along the protagonist, causal, and intentional dimensions of narratives. Eighteen Japanese university students read English narratives containing context and target sentences separated by one (the local condition) or four filler sentences (the global condition) with their eye movements recorded. The results showed that readers constantly monitored protagonist coherence; however, they had increased difficulty monitoring causal and intentional coherence.
