CAOS 2022: Editor's Preface

About the volume:

This volume contains the papers presented at CAOS 2022: The 20th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery held on June 8-11, 2022 in Brest, France.

There were 87 submissions in this first in person CAOS meeting since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Each submission was reviewed by three program committee members, one of whom clinical and two with a technical background. Authors of 42 of these opted into this open access format.

About the conference:

After two years without meetings, being together was the meeting's first priority. Our will was to physically welcome attendees by the sea in our lovely city, Brest. However, times are tough, COVID-19 is still responsible for some travel restrictions and quarantine in some part of the world, and the uncertainty related to geopolitics issues raises other questions.

CAOS is now entering a new world: the world of Data. For years, we have been successfully focused on the development and clinical use of new technologies, sensors, software and clinical workflows. And, so far, the first main contribution of CAOS to Orthopaedics was to raise many new fundamental questions. The time has now come to go further and to answer these questions! The explosion of new technologies offers us access to a tremendous amount of data. Connected implants, smart instruments, IoT… all contribute to the development of quantitative approaches which will transform, in outpatient, the healthcare organisations, as well as the relationships within the communities (patients, healthcare professionals, and wider society).

Producing data implies also managing them. Data warehouse interconnections, massive access to clinical databases, connection between research and clinical datasets, links between biology, surgery and engineering: so many concepts that will transform our world. Data storage, transmission, sharing, analysis and securing will therefore become major issues in our future.

CAOS 2022 was the place where newcomers, experienced engineers, surgeons, and researchers had the unique opportunity to mix their cultures and their knowledge, in order to tackle these challenges and to design the future of orthopaedics. Pre-Conference Workshops and focus groups addressed cutting-edge and promising technologies in a pedagogic way. The main conference put forward the latest research and innovations in CAOS.

We wish to thank all of the authors and program committee members for their time and effort, which made this volume possible. We would also like to thank all of the sponsors and partners that supported this meeting.
